Racing applications quickly push the heavy, drum over its limits, with failure most common at the weak point where the shaft and drum connect. We can address the problem with a larger spline and lighter-weight, aftermarket aluminum drum. However, durability becomes a concern due to the wear of the clutch splines, shaft spline connection, and seal ring bore.
An engineered Sonnax chromoly steel drum with several lightweight features, custom-designed to significantly reduce weight and ensure reliability, results in the drum. It weighs 3 lbs less than the OE drum and is just 3 oz. heavier than a common aluminum drum. The drummaker carefully reduces the weight of the drum, maintaining strength, by ribbing its front, adding clutch splines (28 versus . 14), lightening holes, and decreasing the inner section diameter at the middle seal ring area.
