In GM Gen. 1 and 2 6T70 and 6T75 units, the 3-5-R waved plate frequently fails and breaks into pieces, resulting in code P0776, harsh and flare shifts, or a complete loss of 3-5-R. While the OEM attempted to address this issue by supplying an upgraded (shot-peen) plate, it still fails in some machines, causing damage to the drum housing splines. The OE plate’s teeth are high-stress locations that cannot withstand long-term strain. Even non-broken plates can have micro-fractures at the tooth edges and be on the point of failing.
