Failure of the intermediate stub shaft and direct drum is common when Ford AODE transmissions are pushed to their limits. To maximize durability and clutch capacity in heavy-duty or performance vehicles, Sonnax developed the Smart-Tech kit — the first upgrade to eliminate every critical weakness.

Most failures occur at the connection between the direct drum and stub shaft. Even aftermarket upgrades with heavy-duty shafts can shear under extreme conditions. The Smart-Tech kit features a one-piece clutch drum with an integrated stub shaft, precision-machined from high-strength steel. This design eliminates splines that can strip and weak shaft connections. The shaft is significantly thicker and twice as strong as OE, and must be used with the kit’s custom heavy-duty sun gear.

To improve clutch holding power and reliability, the Smart-Tech drum and piston accommodate an OE backing plate and seven OE frictions — a 17% increase in clutch capacity over the standard six-friction stack-up. Unlike thinner aftermarket steels and plates, this setup reduces clutch pack flex and heat build-up.

The included sun gear features a 2.40/1.46 ratio, ideal for high-power racing applications. Compared to the 2.84/1.55 ratio in Sonnax 76656-01K, this lower ratio keeps engines in the optimal power band and allows longer pulls in first and second gears.

To fit seven frictions, use (7) .068" frictions and (7) .075" steels with OE .219" thick backing plate.
